about

Morcaint is a Swedish black metal band with roots going back all the way to 2008. “Elessar” will be the project’s first official release – available in digital EP format as of March 3, 2023, courtesy of Nordvis.

Like Blodtår – the main band of Morcaint’s primary composer, Heruhim – the music is characterised by the convergence of archaic black metal magic and contemporary innovation. Whilst not a clone by any means, “Elessar” is the ultimate hybrid of Dissection and Summoning, but set in far colder Emperor-like soundscapes.

At its start in 2008, Morcaint was the first black metal band of both Ulvtyr and Heruhim. They composed an album, but Morcaint was put on ice before recording anything. The two drifted apart and engaged in various projects until recently when they found their way back to each other.

For this release, they decided to use Tolkien’s universe as their thematic foundation. The lyrics of “Elessar” are put together in parts from Galadriel’s message to Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings. “O Lórien!” borrows from The Song of Lórien – as performed by Galadriel on the day the Fellowship of the Ring departs Lothlórien.

Heruhim commented:

We have tremendous respect for Tolkien and all that he inspires in us. The awe of Middle Earth and beyond! Morcaint is an expression of our love for his magnificent work.

The musical idea behind “Elessar” is made immediately apparent, with jittering synth choirs and strings drawing Falkenbach’s old demos to mind. The guitar leads, which derive mostly from Dissection, are paired with riffs inspired by the earliest Dimmu Borgir releases. When it comes to keyboard work, the reverberating cold darkness of the first Emperor EP is forever burnt into my creative muscle.

In “O Lórien!”, we attempt to convey the sorrowful, nostalgic lamentations of Galadriel as she ponders the darkness growing in the east. The lyrics speak for themselves, but musically I’ve drawn significant inspiration from the work of Howard Shore, who wrote the otherworldly score for Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. For a long time, I have dreamt of using a cinematic approach in my black metal songwriting, and “O Lórien!” was the perfect opportunity to do so.
